30 years ago, Bruce Springsteen walked the streets of Asbury Park,
became friends with Clarence Clemons there and went on to become The Boss. He turned Asbury into a mecca of music inspiring other artists
from the area like Steven Van Zandt (Silvio), Southside Johnny, Gary US Bonds, and even Bon Jovi playing in legendary clubs like The Stone
Pony. Well it's now the year 2000 and all Asbury Park has now is The Saint. God help us all. You have to respect a musician like Mike who has to sometimes grind it out and play places like this in front of 30 people. As he opened with Springtime, people at the bar were talking away and barely paying attention. A minute or two into the song, the talking stopped as he got their attention. If it wasn't for Lenny The Lounge Lizard who at 11pm would be doing 80's night, it could have been one of those special nights in Asbury. And for 7 bucks no less. It was special for a girl named Wendy in a Hilfiger shirt who took a liking to Mike. While telling a comical story in the middle of You Shook Me All Night Long, Wendy approached the stage to banter with Mike. She continued to do this the rest of the show. As he was trying to end the show with Someday, she wouldn't leave him alone or take any hints. Mike calmly spoke into the microphone, "Security!" It was extremely funny. They hugged after the show. When he finished, the sound guy, in the only thing he did good all night, asked the crowd and Mike for an encore. If only Lenny the Lizard wasn't there I tell you. So Mike goes back onstage, cutting into Lenny's time, to play a song he hasn't played in a long long time. In honor of Cardinal O'Connor, the Pope's 80th birthday and by request, he played If I Were The Pope. The only thing missing was Springsteen popping in to do a song with Mike. Setlist in order Springtime Sooner or Later God Daylight (story knocks em dead every time) I Think Your Name Is Stacy You Shook Me All Night Long (in honor of 80's night-Wendy and crowd loved it) 1000 Miles American Royalty(OJ reference made some eyebrows go up) Someday If I Were The Pope |
